Hairspray is the story of a blissful schoolgirl named Tracy Turnblad, an aspiring dancer who wants to gain a position on a neighbouring television show named the Corny Collins Show. The programme is in actual fact based on a Baltimore-based television programme named the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland. Tracy is no one in the performing arts arena when she has an interview, despite this she is selected for one of the performing roles and against exceptionally long odds she becomes a dancing celebrity almost overnight. Tracy is over the moon by this brand new recognition, & she makes the decision to use her new found fame to bring about positive changes to the TV program. The major grounds for these positive improvements is to do with race. Tracy hopes to racially amalgamate the television show, and as anyone can imagine, she is faced with a large amount of confrontation.
Hairspray arrived at the West End in London in 2007, opening for the media at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October the eleventh, before being opened to the paying public at its certified opening on October 30, two-thousand & seven. The theatrical production has had some notable actors — Michael Ball takes one of the lead roles as Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s mother, providing a very compelling rendition in this tough female role, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop owner Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the London West End also features newcomer to the stage, Leanne Jones, in the role of Tracy.
Hairspray the theatre show has gained lots of positive remarks from journalists & musical theatre fans alike. Jacqueline said: “I have been to the play four times to date and I will be going back sometime next week and a few more times after that. I love the moment & wish they could stay on much longer. Ben Ellis is incredible as link and Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all marvellous. The musical production of hairspray is undeniably my favourite, merely because it is upbeat and if you’re feeling a tad bit down in the dumps then it is guaranteed to make you feel a whole lot better. I definitely give it a 10 out of 10 - I love it well done to everyone concerned.
